Portraits of very young children present the biggest challenge as thier features are so delicate that the lines that define them are barely there! ...so when this one came in, I had to roll my sleeves up!
Mum didn't want to feature in the finished work, so she was subtley edited out so that her daughter could be front and centre of the portrait.
I began with a detailed drawing in graphite, rendering all of the subtle tones before adding colour to a high quality print on heavyweight cartridge paper, using highly pigmented oil based coloured pencils.
This technique lends a rich depth to the tones and overall finish.
