This is a face I know almost as well as my own as it belongs to my love and my best friend and husband Phil. It is an oil on canvas and is one of the first successful portraits I produced well over a decade ago now.
I took a series of close-up shots of him and chose this one as the main reference for its quirky slightly out-of-shot look as I wanted to create a non-conventional painting using traditional methods of building the likeness in thin monochromatic semi-transparent layers.
Unfortunately, there are no progress images to accompany this as I did it back in the day before smartphones and instantly accessible photographs.
My husband actually really likes it, which is a huge compliment as he is not someone who likes to have images of himself on display but he doesn't mind this one and even has it as his profile picture on social media!
Suffice to say, it remains as part of our private collection and hangs on the wall just outside my studio.
